Montauk fishing charter boat facts: Fisherman's Special
Montauk's charter and party boat fishing boomed througout the 1920's and 30's. Fishing boats, now so common to modern Montauk, just started to appear at the new main dock and the favorite way to fill those boats was the famed Long Island Rail Road's "Fisherman's Special" train. In 1934 alone over 20,000 fishermen rode the rails to Montauk, in search of striped bass, bluefish, cod, pollack, flounder, fluke and sea bass thriving only a few miles off- shore. Round trip from New York, Brooklyn, Woodside, Jamaica was a big $2.75 (including tax).
